The Story
A vessel of tenderness and quiet unease, The Lonely Bowl is hand-built from layers of discarded paper, each fold and curve bearing the imprint of care and intention. On its exterior, the imagery of a 90s childhood dances with charm and comfort: a Care Bear smiles gently, angels drift across the surface, and scratch-and-sniff stickers evoke the small joys of youth. Amidst this sweetness, the Virgin Mary stands serene, and the word Lonely, rendered in gothic tattoo script, whispers of isolation, guilt, and the shadows that often accompany growing up. The outside is soft, nostalgic, and cosy - a gentle invitation into memory.
Step inside, and the tone shifts. A silver key rests in the center, its keyring inscribed with “Come up and see me sometime”, a flirtation frozen in time, a hint of longing and connection. Beside it lies a Prozac capsule, a quiet testament to the inner turbulence of adulthood, the ways we try to navigate, soothe, and survive our hidden struggles. The inside of the bowl holds honesty, contradiction, and vulnerability - hidden narratives that contrast sharply with the playful exterior.
The Lonely Bowl is both sculpture and story, a conversation between nostalgia and reality, sweetness and sorrow. It is a hand-built, hand-painted relic of memory and feeling, a vessel that holds not only objects but emotions - offering a space to reflect on the innocence we carry, the loneliness we endure, and the small objects that anchor us through it all.
