The Story
A vessel of memory and contradiction, The Angel Bowl is hand-built from layers of paper and painted with care, each curve a tactile echo of a 90s childhood. On its exterior, sweetness reigns: a delicate Bambi statuette pauses mid-step, three angels drift above, and a scratch-and-sniff sticker evokes the longing of a childhood wish. A Sacred Heart of Jesus anchors the piece in faith and ritual, while a vintage cartoon angel winks from the surface - symbols of comfort, guidance, and nostalgia. The outside is soft, innocent, and familiar, a small universe of joy, wonder, and reverence.
Step inside, and the story shifts. A pink Playboy lighter rests alongside a roll of Kodak film, quiet yet pointed symbols of how girls were framed and perceived in the 90s - curiosity, desire, and rebellion always shaped by the male gaze. The interior speaks to the tension of growing up female in that era: the push to be attractive, performative, and observed, layered over the playfulness and imagination of childhood. It is intimate, honest, and a little subversive - a counterpoint to the pastel sweetness beyond the rim.
The Angel Bowl is more than a sculptural object - it is a narrative in three dimensions, a vessel for memory, longing, and reflection. Hand-painted and entirely unique, it invites conversation about innocence and objectification, nostalgia and critique, comfort and challenge. Placed at the centre of a table or on a shelf, it becomes both a visual delight and a story to uncover, a testament to the contradictions, pressures, and resilience of growing up as a girl in the 90s.
