The Story

A lullaby wrapped in contradiction, this painting unfolds as a dreamscape where nostalgia and consequence quietly collide. Lambs leap weightlessly through the air, lifted from the ritual of counting sheep, while below, a plastic bag billows like an unwanted ghost, once convenient, now a symbol of thoughtless consumption. Horses play in soft-hued fields, recalling audiobooks my grandfather would play on childhood sleepovers, and a solitary Barcelona Chair sits in polished stillness, a former beacon of aspiration and design-led status. A silver heart-shaped locket - my grandmother’s - rests gently within the scene, heavy with memory yet light against the body, while each object whispers of desire, comfort, and longing, asking what we reach for, what we inherit, and what refuses to be left behind.

At the centre, a small glass bottle stands humble yet powerful, its worn label and lingering menthol scent evoking a mother’s care. Pressed into the skin by her warm hands, it was a cure for everything, from aches to heartache. The painting hums with quiet devotion, love rendered as ritual, care as instinct. And yet, the air has changed: the scent lingers, but she is gone, leaving only the bottle - a relic of a time when her presence alone was enough to make everything better.
