The Story
A game of strategy reimagined as personal mythology - this hand-made chess set turns a familiar battlefield into a portrait of memory, humour, and iconography. Built slowly from household paper waste, each piece is entirely unique, its form imperfect by design, its surface hand-painted with symbols that carry both cultural weight and playful mischief. No two games are ever the same, because no two pieces are alike.
The king stands not as a distant monarch, but as Elvis Presley: eternal, idolised, frozen mid-legend. He is power softened by spectacle, authority shaped by pop worship. The queen, crowned not in jewels but in stripes, appears as Mr Doobie, the queen bee herself: quietly unstoppable. Power here is not inherited; it hums, it works.
The rooks hold the edges of the board with dual identities. One rises as the Disney castle, all fantasy and promise, a gateway to belief. The other remains resolutely ordinary: a stone castle, grounded, practical, a reminder that not all fortresses are built from dreams. Together, they frame the tension between imagination and reality, the places we escape to and the ones we must defend.
The knights move sideways, as they always have - agents of disruption and surprise. My Little Pony prances in with pastel optimism, while Quick Draw McGraw brings swagger, speed, and cartoon bravado. They are childhood heroes recast as strategic wildcards, symbols of the way play once taught us how to navigate rules by bending them.
This is not a pristine heirloom set meant to be admired from a distance. It is tactile, narrative, and alive with contradiction. Made from discarded paper and elevated through care, it speaks to transformation - of waste into worth, of games into stories, of nostalgia into something sharper and more deliberate. At once playful and profound, this chess set invites you not just to play, but to remember, to question, and to make your move.
